Design Quick Tip: Selecting and Formatting Text in the Live Preview Tool
Hey there! Rachel, here, with some design quick tips about how to select and format your text using our live preview tool to personalize your wedding guest book or planner.
One of the coolest features of our live preview tool is that you can see your names in a variety of different font styles before your book is printed. For those of you who are particular about font styles (like me!) this is a very valuable tool. It's super annoying to find a design layout you like, only to see your name in the offered font and discover that some of the letters look a little funky. With our live preview tool, you no longer have to be stuck with funky fonts or worse, pay extra for the font change fees charged by some designers. [Cue massive round of applause.] Read on for the four most helpful text how-tos that will allow you to make the most of this valuable tool.
How To Add Your Text
When you open the preview tool, you'll see the design you purchased with filler text already placed and formatted on the page. To add your names and info, just click once on the text you want to change. On the right side of the screen, a tool bar will open up with a box where you can enter your names. Click in the box, type in your info, and your text with then populate the live preview on the left.
How To Change Your Font
If you want to check out the other font options available, just click on the dropdown menu directly below the text input box. A list of all the font options will open and you can click through the list and view your names until you find the perfect fit.
Now, let's say the filler text is in a traditional serif print like my favorite, Baskerville, but you decide you want to match the script used on your invitations which is Adelicia. You've opened the dropdown menu and scrolled down to Adelicia, but when click on it, the preview shows your names with large blank spaces between each letter and it doesn't look like the flowing, connected script that looks so beautiful on your invites.
Never fear! Letter spacing, also known as tracking, is one of the best kept secrets of great design and our preview tool allows you to adjust the tracking to fit any font style.
How to Change Your Font Tracking
To increase or decrease the amount of space between the letters in your text, first click on the text you want to change on the preview screen. Go to the tool bar on the right side of the screen and click on the tracking button. I've highlighted the button in the screenshot below. A slider will then open up. Click and drag the slider to change the tracking - moving left to reduce the amount of space between each letter or moving right to increase the space. I recommend setting the tracking to zero for script fonts - this will create the connected, flowing look that is typical of cursive text.
How to Change the Space Between Lines of Text
Similar to tracking, you can also increase or decrease the amount of space between entire lines of text. For example, let's say the design layout you selected lists only your wedding date but you want to add a wedding location right below the date on a second line. Simply click in the text box and add your date and location. To increase or decrease the amount of space between those lines, click on the line spacing button (highlighted below) and use the slider to adjust the space up or down, like the font tracking slider.
Summing Up
Text formatting in our preview tool is really pretty simple but it can have a big impact on the final product, giving it a more polished, professional look. It's definitely worth experimenting with and don't forget you can always hit the that trusty undo button! As always, please reach out to us if you need help.
